The Opening series against the Yankees was a disaster - it almost can’t get any worse
We are 3 games into this season and 0 and 3 with two shutouts against us thrown by the Yankees. It took until the 3rd game to score a run (at least I was there for that run). For a team with this much promise, that is a hideous way to open the season. What and who is to blame? In spring training, the G-Men were playing great, and the weakness was supposed to be the pitching. However, at Oracle, the weakness was hitting, and the pitchers did well against the Bronx bombers. Go figure. Are the Yankees' pitchers that good? Maybe, but they can be hit, and they will be.
This will be a short post because (a) the Czar is traveling back east to a city whose name is still too sensitive to speak and (b) the results so far speak for themselves. The San Diego series away starting tomorrow is a better test.
Welcome to the Big Leagues Tony Vitallo!
I suspect that the opening series was a wake-up call for the new manager. What did he do wrong? For one, he didn’t intentionally walk Judge, who is hitting like Barry Bonds in his glory coming out of spring training. For another, he didn’t go to his bench right away – we are no longer in Kansas Toto. He has Bruce Bochy and Ron Wotus in the dugout – I suggest listening to them more. Tony V is getting rightfully ripped in the press, so the story now is how he rebounds and uses the tools he has most effectively against the two teams coming up at home next week – the Mets and the Phillies.
The Mets and the Phillies – Can they be had?
The Mets opened against the year 2 and 1 against the Pirates, and the Phillies opened the season 1 and 2 against the Rangers. It’s much too early to tell whether the talent on those two teams will be enough to overcome the Tony V yips. We must go to the games and find out. The season has truly begun.

THE PROTOCOL: The firm has four seats in Section 118 (Premium Lower Boxes), Rows 25 and 26. These are awesome seats directly below the press box and 25 rows behind the home plate on the left side behind the screen. It is foul ball territory for left-handed batters, so bring your glove – I have collected 22 foul balls myself over 23 years and am looking for more. If we don’t use all the tickets ourselves (or clients and friends of the firm don't claim them by calling me and reserving a game), then my next step is to give the tickets TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO GETS BACK TO ME PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE SERIOUS. If you ask for the tickets and don't use them, you will be taken off the list unless there is a seriously good reason. There will be a waitlist.
When there are four seats available (we split up a lot of games) we will allocate the tickets two and two if the first people back just want two tickets. You can also go for four and might get them. I'm the Czar, my call.
Oh, and BTW, The Czar found the original Hinman & Carmichael brick from 2000 (after looking for it every year since 2000) and found H&C’s Gotham Club Founders Bat! If you are on the patio or in the Club, look for the symbols of baseball!
