Something has happened to the Giants Bats – we need to reach out to Jo-Bu
This will be a short blog post because the G-Men are on a road trip sucking big time. They got swept by the Marlins, lost 2 out of 3 to the White Sox, and have lost (so far) 2 out of 3 to the Snakes. That they are 46 and 41, and a half game behind the Padres is a miracle akin to Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
What is the answer everyone is asking? New coaches? New Bats? Stop pressing and play like you played in Little League? All the above to a certain degree, but my theory is that we need Jo-Bu’s intervention because the bats need to be blessed. For those who have forgotten how Jo-Bu can turn a season around, watch Major League again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gO3HsgSe1c
Jo-Bu’s locker is in the reception area of our office, and today we lit a cigar and did a shot of rum. If all the Giants fans everywhere did that, I’m sure the bats will start to come around, and the number of men left on base will shrink back down to an acceptable number. But everyone must do their bit. The picture is below.
Illness, injury, and who’s on first?
Part of the problem (although so far, the defense hasn’t suffered too badly) is the number of players out of the line-up. Chapman has been gone for almost 4 weeks, Schmitt went on the DL after getting plunked in the hand again, and 3d base is a disaster zone with Wisely also going down and Fitzgerald being called back up. Flores has picked up the cudgel at first, but he is still batting .241, and that is simply unacceptable. For that matter, the G-Men have NO .300 hitters at this point in the season (another reason to reach out to Jo-Bu). Devers seems to be for real, but is still getting his bearings, and we have yet to see him on defense. Thank God for Jung Hoo Lee. He may be the offensive savior this year, and his defense is a thing of beauty.
The pitching staff is holding its own with Logan Webb and Robbie Ray standing out, and the bullpen is tough, although it must be demoralizing to know that if you give up a run the bats can’t make it up. Right now, the hope is that the team can rest and recover over the All-Star break and come back strong in the second half (although the 3 upcoming minor league games against the A’s in Sacramento before the last homestand may be a welcome break).
Frankly, had anyone asked me before the season if I would have been satisfied to be in the hunt for the wild card (and tied with San Diego) at the halfway point I would have said yes, but how we got there (especially over the last two weeks) is enervating.
The Upcoming series – Phillies and Dodgers, and the All-Star Break
The six home games before the break are against the two leading teams in baseball, the Phillies (leading the NL East with a 51 and 46 record) and that group from LA that at least had the good taste to boot ICE out of the stadium. The name of the team shall not cross my lips.
On the Board ready for pick up are:
MON 7/7 [6:45] Phillies – (3) – I’m going
Let the torture continue.
Ciao, and GO GIANTS!

THE PROTOCOL: The firm has four seats in Section 118 (Premium Lower Boxes), Rows 25 and 26. These are awesome seats directly below the press box and 25 rows behind the home plate on the left side behind the screen. It is foul ball territory for left-handed batters so bring your glove – I have collected 22 foul balls myself over 23 years and am looking for more. If we don’t use all the tickets ourselves (or clients and friends of the firm don't claim them by calling me and reserving a game), then my next step is to give the tickets TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO GETS BACK TO ME PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE SERIOUS. If you ask for the tickets and don't use them, you will be taken off the list unless there is a seriously good reason. There will be a waitlist.
When there are four seats available (we split up a lot of games) we will allocate the tickets two and two if the first people back just want two tickets. You can also go for four and might get them. I'm the Czar, my call.
Oh, and BTW, The Czar found the original Hinman & Carmichael brick from 2000 (after looking for it every year since 2000) and found H&C’s Gotham Club Founders Bat! If you are on the patio, or in the Club, look for the symbols of baseball!
